The Process

When you take a close look at our structures, you’ll immediately notice the outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into every piece.

Our master craftsmen handcraft each item, using traditional furniture-making techniques to ensure the highest quality. Before anything leaves the workshop, we carefully inspect it to make sure it’s up to the Trellis Structures standards.

Our products include unique features that are not typically find in garden arbors, such as mortise and tenon joints, splined joints, channel dadoes, and dowel pins. These techniques help create a strong, cohesive structure that’s built to last.

When assembling the arches, We use three sturdy three-inch dowel pins in every joint, along with 100% waterproof glue for added durability. To anchor the arbor to the ground, we have developed a system that uses rust-proof aluminum pipes. These pipes not only stand the test of time, but are also discreetly hidden within the arbor post.

Our History

Trellis Structures was founded in 1995 by David Valcovic and Patricia Cornell as a division of their furniture design and manufacturing business. Their passion for creating beautiful and functional outdoor spaces led them to develop a line of garden structures that combined both form and function.

With a strong interest in creative design and excellence in craftsmanship, they set out to produce high-quality garden structures for homeowners, design professionals, and commercial developers.

Over the years, Trellis Structures has become one of the country’s leading direct-to-consumer manufacturers of garden structures, nationally recognized by architects, landscape architects, and designers. Our designs take a fresh look at classical shapes, with influences varying from English garden structures to Asian architecture, and from the Arts and Crafts movement to the modern and neoclassical.

In 2022, Kris Schumacher and Erich Schumacher purchased the business from David and Patricia, bringing with them a deep appreciation of natural materials and a background in carpentry. Having grown up on a family tree farm and milling lumber for the family business, as well as working in residential carpentry, Kris and Erich were drawn to the quality of Trellis Structures’ work and the legacy of David and Patricia.

Andrew Buell, the head of design, had been working directly with David for several years before the transition, being trained to take over his role. With deep experience in the industry, Andrew has been integral in driving Trellis Structures to the next phase.

Together, Kris, Erich, and Andrew are honored to carry on the legacy of David and Patricia by working with the Trellis Structures team to continue to create beautiful and functional outdoor spaces that enhance the lives of our customers. With their passion for natural materials, carpentry, and design, they are proud to be part of a team that shares their values and commitment to excellence.
