The following is an explanation of several projects including the requirements, constraints and finally the solutions employed to successfully complete each one. We pride ourselves on incorporating the correct engineering for each project and welcome future unique design challenges such as these.
Large Pergola with Shade Cloth
This client requested a pergola, stained white, that would provide significant amounts of shade.
In order to keep the structure light in appearance, we incorporated a very nice white shade cloth that provided a 60% UV filter. The shade cloth is attached using stainless steel clips and is put up in approximately five minutes.
The arches are functional in stabilizing the structure and are aesthetically pleasing. The arch and bracket are perfectly symmetrical about the post.
We used 7½" x 7½" posts as the structure was quite large at 18' x 11½' post to post.
At the client's request, we incorporated a rod from which will hang side curtains to be installed at a later date. The rod runs the entire perimeter and allows the curtains to be moved unimpeded by supports.
Outdoor Kitchen Pergola
An exquisite patio area with an outdoor kitchen is accented with an overhead pergola. This structure will be covered with climbing vines to create an elegant and shaded seating area.
The beams and rafters were extended several feet beyond the main posts to cover the counter and chairs thus creating a beautiful cantilevered top.
The stone counter top was cut to receive the posts. The plinth bases slid down over the posts and were secured.
The final result: a stunning and welcoming outdoor kitchen.
Patio Pergola with Arched Top
Located over a large patio area to provide shade, this magnificent pergola also establishes a strong focal point and gathering area between a fountain on one end and a fireplace on the other.
The overhead curve of the pergola reflects the large curved wall of the patio and accents the fireplace.
Double rafters sandwich simple support brackets. The brackets have been mortised into the main beams and shaped to continue the curve of the rafters.
The purlins are quite dense and alternate between wide and narrow, establishing rhythm and visual interest while providing significant shade.
Contemporary Pergola for Condo Complex
This contemporary pergola creates a wonderful focal point and meeting place in a suburban complex of townhouses. The open-style structure will soon be covered with vines producing significant shade at the height of the summer season.
Stainless steel rods and acorn screw caps were used to assemble the structure, resulting in very clean design accents.
An interesting design for the base bracket using ½" stainless steel, was incorporated to create stability in this very tall 12' structure. The heavy lattice type frame that divides the tapered post assemblies also aides in the overall structural stability.
This very attractive and challenging project was designed in conjunction with Cave Hill Landscape Architects. Trellis Structures provided engineering, fabrication and installation.
Large Louvered Pergola with Shade Cloth
A unique pergola kit, this structure uses a combination of louvered rafters, I beams and 60% UV block shade cloth, to establish a cool area in a very warm back yard.
The posts are 7 1/8 x 7 1/8 with a subtle corner bead. The plinth bases, which conceal substantial stainless steel brackets, are covered in a copper flashing.
While in the pictures the copper is bright, it will soon develop a brown patina and eventually a soft green hue.
Large curved brackets, 3½ thick, help with the structure's stability while lending a softness to the geometry of the design.
